VA disability back pay calculator
A decision usually comes with money owed for the months you waited. Enter the effective date and the decision date from your letter, and this counts the whole months in between and prices each one at the published rates that were actually in effect for it, dependents included, cost-of-living changes and all.
From your decision letter:
Effective date
On the letter, the date your rating is effective from. Usually the date VA received the claim.
Decision date
The date on the decision. Waiting on one? Leave it at this month to see what has built up so far.
Dependents on your award:
How the estimate works: payment starts on the first day of the month after your effective date, per 38 CFR 3.31, and only whole calendar months count. Rates change every December 1 with the cost-of-living adjustment, so a span that crosses a December is priced in segments, each at the VA's published table for those months. The count runs through the last full month before your decision, with regular payments taking over from there, so this estimate leans low rather than high.
What it doesn't model: special monthly compensation, attorney or agent fees withheld from back pay, recoupment of military severance or separation pay, drill pay offsets, and dependents whose effective date differs from the rating's. Rate tables before December 2022 aren't carried, and the tool says so when that trims the answer. Your award letter's own accounting is the authority, and a free accredited VSO can walk you through it line by line.
Not sure of your combined rating? Ratings don't simply add. The VA disability calculator combines them the published way and shows every step.
Back pay questions, answered
How is VA disability back pay calculated?
Back pay is the monthly compensation you were entitled to between your effective date and your decision, paid as a lump sum. Payment starts the first day of the month after your effective date, runs in whole calendar months, and each month is priced at the rate table in effect for it, including your dependents at 30 percent and above. This calculator runs exactly that math on the published tables.
Why does payment start the month after my effective date?
A federal rule, 38 CFR 3.31, says monetary benefits can't be paid for any period before the first day of the calendar month following the month the award became effective. So a rating effective March 15 starts accruing money on April 1. It also means partial months never count; back pay is always whole months.
Is VA back pay taxable?
No. VA disability compensation is excluded from federal income tax, and that includes a retroactive lump sum. It arrives in full and does not go on your tax return.
How long does VA back pay take to arrive?
Usually it shows up as a single direct deposit within a few weeks of the decision, often before the letter itself arrives. There's no fixed deadline, though. If months go by with nothing, ask VA at 800-827-1000 or have your VSO check on it.
Why might my actual back pay be different from this estimate?
Several honest reasons: dependents can carry a different effective date than the rating itself; if an accredited attorney or agent represented you under a fee agreement, VA can withhold their fee (often 20 percent) from back pay; military severance or separation pay may be recouped first; and VA compensation can't be paid for the same days as drill pay. The award letter's own accounting is the authority.
