If anyone offers to help for a cut of your back pay, this is the free version that has existed the whole time. Most veterans get help from a county or state Veterans Service Officer, who are government employees. Your state veterans agency is the gateway.

Many counties employ their own Veterans Service Officers. The National Association of County Veterans Service Officers keeps a searchable map and directory. Not every state funds county-level officers, so if yours has none, your state agency above is the backstop.
