College Fee Waiver
Waives systemwide tuition and fees at CSU, UC, and community colleges for eligible dependents of service-connected disabled veterans. One of the strongest dependent education benefits in the country.
CalVet Home Loans
A state-run home loan program for veterans, separate from the federal VA loan.
Disabled Veterans' Property Tax Exemption
Property tax exemption on a primary residence for veterans with a 100 percent rating, with a larger exemption at lower incomes.
State parks pass
Free day-use access to many state parks for qualifying disabled veterans through the Distinguished Veteran Pass.
Also worth asking about
Most states, California included, run some version of these. Details vary, so ask the agency:
- State veterans homes (long-term care) and state veterans cemeteries
- Veterans preference in state government hiring
- Discounted or free hunting and fishing licenses for disabled veterans
- Veteran designation on the driver's license and veteran license plates
- Some form of property tax relief for qualifying disabled veterans
- Burial honors and headstone or marker assistance
- State tax treatment of military retirement pay, which varies and changes often.
